Preparing Your Outdoor Space for Winter

3 Ways to Prepare Your Outdoor Space for Winter

Just like any other season, during winter, you can keep your outdoor plumbing from freezing by taking preventative measures ahead of time. If your plumbing were to freeze, several components and pipes could experience issues like cracking and bursting.

Here’s how you can prepare your plumbing for colder weather with these tips from our experts at A. Fagundes Plumbing & Heating Inc..

1. Turn off Outdoor Faucets

In colder weather, faucets and valves can freeze, making it almost impossible for your home to get an adequate supply of water. To avoid this, shut off valves and turn off faucets ahead of freezing weather. Easily do this by opening the faucet and the bleeder cap on the shutoff valve to drain any water in the pipe.

Draining water out of the pipe keeps the pipe from freezing. Leave the bleeder cap open and sit a bucket underneath to catch dripping water. Dripping should eventually stop, however, if it continues, then your shutoff valve may need to be replaced.

2. Disconnect Water Hoses

While this is a commonly known fact, if you leave your water hose out in cold weather, it will freeze if they’re filled with water. To save your hose, disconnect it from the faucet, drain it, and store it away for future use.

3. Insulate Pipes

The best way to keep your pipes from freezing during extreme weather is by calling your local plumbing company to insulate them. If you have pipes tucked away in unheated areas around your home, like crawl spaces, attics, or garages, a plumber can easily install insulation. Pipe insulation can be on the affordable side and easy to install.
