What Not to Flush or Pour Down the Drain (Even "Flushable" Wipes)

|

Let's talk about one of the most misleading words in your whole home: "flushable." After 20+ years in the trade, I can tell you it's caused more headaches than almost anything else. Plenty of products slip down the drain easily enough, but they were never meant to leave your pipes, and that's exactly how the worst clogs get their start.

The good news? Once you know what to keep out of your drains, avoiding those clogs is simple. Let's walk through it together.

Why It Happens

  • "Flushable" wipes don't break apart. Unlike toilet paper, they stay whole, catch on a bend in your pipe, and trap everything that follows. That's how a small snag becomes a full blockage.

  • Grease turns solid. Poured down warm, it looks harmless. Once it cools, it hardens inside your pipes and grabs onto everything passing by.

  • Small "harmless" items add up. Cotton swabs, dental floss, and coffee grounds don't dissolve. They collect quietly until the day the drain finally gives up.

What to Keep Out of Your Pipes

  • Never flush: "flushable" wipes, baby wipes, paper towels, cotton pads and swabs, dental floss, feminine products, or so-called flushable cat litter. The only things that belong down the toilet are human waste and toilet paper.

  • Never pour down the drain: grease, oil, or fat of any kind, coffee grounds, and starchy or fibrous food scraps like rice, pasta, and potato peels.

Simple Habits That Actually Work

  • Keep a grease jar by the stove. An empty coffee can or glass jar works perfectly. Pour cooking grease in, let it cool and solidify, then toss it in the trash. Never run hot grease down the drain "with hot water", it just moves further down before it hardens.

  • Put a small trash can next to every toilet. When the trash is the easy choice, wipes and cotton swabs stop going down the bowl. This one habit prevents most of the clogs we're called for.

  • Use a $5 sink strainer. Drop a mesh strainer over your kitchen and bathroom drains. It catches food scraps, hair, and debris before they ever enter your pipes, and you just empty it into the trash.
